Splashes of culture along london road

Flags are being put up on London road this week to celebrate our community, our local shops, organizations and such, that are placed along this road. It should 'brighten up the place' also as they have been designed by local people and youth they should and hopefully will be more appreciated. With Jazzy logo's, font and pictures they will add a certain something and make our already well rounded area seem more whole and cultural. Also it is a good chance to show the artistic side of the locals and a welcoming site to visitors. It also expresses the more secluded art that seem to be hidden on London road, showing that there are many people and hidden talents beneath the well-rounded community.

  1. Possessives have apostrophes after the s, ie its', not it's (which means it is)(except if they're possessive) and plurals like logos never have apostrophes if they did it would mean logo is (abbreviated). Shame.

  2. However, if you put a colon after loves: then it is buildings (abbreviated) makes very clever sense.

Sharrow Loves: It's Community (It is Community)

Sharrow Loves: It's Parks (It is Parks)

Sharrow Loves: Its Music (It is Music)

Very interesting...you can go back to Black Mountain college in the 1950s, Charles Olson, William Carlos Williams, John Austin Speech Act Theory etc

I don't think anyone really looks at the whys and wherefores of cultural iteration of so-called errors as something potentially very constructive!

  5. Sharrow loves its bad grammar.

I've been away quite a lot this month, so I've only noticed the flags this week. I like them, but did no-one think to check they were correct before they went to print?

The possessive for "it" is "its" - a possessive pronoun. Think "his" "hers"...you wouldn't put an apostrophe in them. (Its' is equally wrong, by the way.)

Some may say I'm being picky and it doesn't really matter, but personally I think it's very important. Grammar rules exist to make communication clearer and meaning unambiguous - for the road, we have the highway code to give us a shared set of rules so we all know where we stand; for language, we have grammar (which includes punctuation).

So for me, the flags are a great idea poorly executed...what a shame!

  6. Thanks Alison, your comments are appreciated. We will ensure all future projects are very carefully proof read- I understand this came from a discussion in our office about possesive apostophes!

You would be very welcome to be involcved in new projects as they develop- your skills are obviously needed!
