Tell me about yourself... or Sharrow...

Housewarming

The Distinctive Sharrow Housewarming on Wednesday 23rd September was a really fun evening where we chatted, found out about each other, collected people's ideas and let people know about the projects which we have been involved in...

Our displays told people about:
1. Distinctive Sharrow / The Distinctive Sharrow Toolkit
2. The Action Group
3. Our future plans
4. The four key projects: i. flags, ii. signs (the word on the street), iii. Lloyds corner, iv. empty shops

During the evening we asked people to add to:
1. The display about people of Sharrow (by telling us something about themselves or their relationship with Sharrow and chalk in on a board and have their portrait taken)
2. A map of Sharrow painted on the wall (telling us a project idea, something we should know about Sharrow, or something that inspires them about Sharrow)
3. A display of exciting ideas, ways to act, art, architecture, landscape or design projects they love. (either by making a card or chalking on the wall)

The photos below give a glimpse of some of the input/ ideas that came back. A comprehensive collation of this will be posted on the blog and this will go on to inspire our agenda for the next few months.

We have also had an expression of interest from a few new members and hope they are still keen to be involved- a meeting will be confirmed asap to welcome them into the group. Guide to Open Places

http://www.open-places.com/about.php http://www.open-places.com/index.php

Do you know a place in a city...
...that is open for realising your own ideas? that allows multiple uses and programs? that is accessible for everybody? that is part of your everyday life? that you are able to utilise? that becomes alive through your action? where people come together?

Open Places set impulses, make a point and have effects. Even in regulated societies they provide niches of openness, freedom and self-determination. These places give a glimpse of what an Open City could be and look like. They are the spatial manifestation of the idea of coexistence...

inspring ideas cards

I am starting to put together some cards with inspring ideas on them- hopefully to get people thinking about future projects in the area and really to update/ build on the toolkit information. I intend to also put some blanks cards up so people can add to these ideas... I have kept text to an absolute minimum, but this does include a link so that people can find out more.

Room Painting and design of displays: DS HQ

We had a painting day on Saturday, decorating the new DS Action Group HQ... Thanks to everyone who helped...and as you can see have now painted a map of Sharrow on the wall... we hope to use this to add information about DS Action group and others' projects in the neighbourhood. Hopefully as we begin to do more spontaneous projects these can also be mapped.

There is still some painting to do- largely of the woodwork, please contact me if you may be able to spare a couple of hours to help.

We also need to design displays for our housewarming event which is fast approaching. It has been discussed that this will include information about our projects, students work, planning applications, community building projects and inspirational ideas from others... If you would like to be involved or have any ideas for this it would be much appreciated.

Empty Shops

David Parker of Sheffield City Council has very kindly offered to give us a tour of the shops on the Moor and explain the processes he went through in order to make them suitable for occupation (training occurs on the first and second floors) and the dressing of the windows.
If you would like to attend, we are meeting at 2pm outside the Town Hall. Please come along!

Room painting day: Saturday 15th August

Room painting will be a drop-in between 10am and 4pm on Saturday 15th August 2009 with lunch provided around 12.30pm. Please come along!

Please find below my draft layout for the room (if we share with Grow Sheffield). Comments welcome. Click on the image to enlarge it- alternatively email julia@sharrowcf.org.uk for a copy.

Unfortunately Stokes currently do not have any paint available for donation... Has anyone had any luck on freecycle, either in terms of paint or any other items we require?

Portland Works and the John Street Triangle

Update on Portland Works/ The John Street Triangle.

Empty Shops and Rates

Need to understand and explain rates and empty shops? Rates Matrix available for download now!

http://www.meanwhile.org.uk/9.html

The good news is that there can be up to 100% discount on rates for shops used for 'meanwhile' community uses... This is however, discretionary and so we would have to discuss it with the council...

Meanwhile space offer financial support for projects and this is the form we would need to fill in: http://www.meanwhile.org.uk/resources/Project+overview+template.doc

Does anyone want to give this a go?
