feedback on washing line of urban design

- People liked: 9 Comments : Looks impressive but not suitable. A place to stop and think. I like this but it is likely to get vandalised and it would be a tripping hazard for the blind and elderly. Could put some small pieces on some of the kerb. Small clusters near the kerb edge distanced about 3ft apart will stop cars driving onto the area.

- People liked: 3 Comments: Perfect for kids + mums to relax. Not a good idea too near a main road to have unsupervised children playing. Parent. Area too small for a water feature that kids could play in, but I like the idea. Resident. Too many health and safety issues.

Informal public consultation (Saturday 4th October 2008)
The following note is based on the comments collected on site on Saturday 4th October and in the Lloyds Pharmacy shop by Paula. I did not have a chance to look at and transcribe the original post it and therefore this note is based on the document produced by Paula. The consultation was very limited and therefore is not necessarily representative of the views/desires of the people using the Lloyds corner. However the following ideas emerge from the comments. (the quotations from the notes are in italics; in italics bold when they come from the board rather than the images, I added the words in red to help understanding the context, the general comments are based on my interpretation)
· Words used to described what the space could look like:
o Nice and colourful
o Simple interactive fun/very funny
o Very green/more green
o Like the paving/looks impressive
o Bushes around trees
o Water feature that kids could play in but area too small/health and safety issues
o Trees lots of them but not too many trees, just a couple of trees
o Trees +permanent space clearing for temporary exhibitions(community)
o The monumental sculpture with colourful background had 5 votes but no comments
o Sculptures
o Not too ambitious
· Need to find a function for that space

General comments
· Contradiction between preferences for welcoming space to seat, chat, eat…etc and the strong opinion that any sitting arrangement even informal would attract street drinkers, which is perceived to be the main problem by local residents and shop keepers. My suggestion would be to have a temporary arrangement of sitting/shelter may be a mobile café (I have seen that in London and at the wood craft fair in Endcliffe Park), to test/demonstrate the effect of reclaiming the space for other activities rather than unoccupied and neglected.
· The image showing a more informal birch woodland was not selected by any participant; this might indicate that Lloyds Corner is perceived as an urban space; Implying dominance of hard surfaces, visually open and intensively maintained. However in order to create more sustainable urban environment, we (professionals/environmentalists) are promoting more porous surfaces in dense urban locations to allow for rain water to permeate on site and reduce risk of flooding; I suppose the challenge is to achieve the right balance.
· The less inspiring image with the sculptural bike parking arrangement did not get any vote; this might reveal higher expectation for the space, not just functional with uninspiring street furniture?

Next Meeting Date
The next Action Group meeting has been proposed for the 26th Nov at 6.30pm at the meeting room at The Old School, South View Road. I will draw up an agenda, which I will forward around before the meeting for anyone to add other items, the recent email from Julia be our main focus (building exploratory)
The 26th of the month will be generally when I will be calling meetings however we will discuss how people feel about this at the next meeting and also decide what we will do about Christmas time..

Building Exploratory II: 2008-9
The Building Exploratory will have two key elements; the displays and the workshops. The displays will primarily include three Sheffield University Live Projects, (Lost in Lansdowne, Grow Sheffield Food Map and Arch). There will also be displays relating to the Distinctive Sharrow Toolkit, The Distinctive Sharrow Action Group, and the shortlist of the signposts competition and update on the flags project and the work of Holly Barnes, the Community Forester.
It has been decided that we will run three workshops, the first about Lloyds Corner, which will be designed by the action group according to the outcomes of their current research into the space and its significance. The second will be an architecture trail which will invite people to photograph their local buildings and also map their routes through the area. The third will be a signposts project where people will design and place signposts in places around Sharrow. These workshops will need to be designed in greater detail. The information gathered from them will be fed into briefs for action in Sharrow and be displayed in the shop for the duration of the project.
We now need to confirm a venue and hope to hold the exploratory within the next couple of months. The shop opening hours will depend on the availability of the forum staff and volunteers. A timetable will be posted on the blog where volunteers can sign up to times. The shop window will be used to further promote the events and also to display the work produced during the events.
The outcomes of the shop should be:
1. To inform: present the projects that are currently ongoing- live projects (Lansdowne/ Arch/ Grow Sheffield), toolkit projects (Flags/ Signs/ Lloyd’s Corner), and Community Forrester projects.
2. To allow people to speculate on where these projects should go next, feed in to emerging briefs and respond to what has happened before.
3.To engage local businesses and allow them a space to give their views on their area.
4. To publicise the Action Group and invite people to join in.
